Orange County Justice Fund's immigration bond fund Orange County Justice Fund's immigration bond fund is stronger than ever. On Thursday, April 13, 2023 over 100 OCJF supporters came together to not only golf but raise awareness and funds for the thousands of OC community members impacted by immigration enforcement policies such as detention, deportation, and neglected due process rights. It was amazing to have the continued support of @greengoatgolf , @kld_llp , and @themyerslawgroup thank you for your dedication to helping OCJF fundraise, and @koicbd @hicks_exterior_accents @cervezacito @missminidonuts @bosscatkitchen @veniceduck @muchomuchocatering @gcsushi and The Goat who made this event extremely special. Join us on April 21, 2023, for a roundtable discus Join us on April 21, 2023, for a roundtable discussion on immigration-related legal empowerment alternatives in Orange County. While providing immigrants more access to legal counsel is a necessary step toward justice, it is insufficient to fully address the needs of immigrant communities. Legal empowerment strategies redistribute power by empowering immigrant communities to be social change leaders instead of recipients of transactional legal services. We’ll hear about nationwide strategies from the NYU School of Law: Bernstein Institute for Human Rights and OC organizations such as the Orange County Justice Fund, OC Rapid Response Network, Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project, and UC Irvine Law Immigrant Rights Clinic about local strategies. We are happy to announce that Mr. Awuni, who recei We are happy to announce that Mr. Awuni, who received assistance through our bond fund in 2019, was granted asylum after many years of fighting for relief! Mr. Awuni is originally from Ghana. We learned of him through our partners at the @lgbtqcenteroc .They contributed to his fund along with @migrantfreedom , OCJF and his loved ones. It takes a village!   We are so excited for Mr. Awuni, and we believe asylum is a human right because everyone deserves a safe place to live. That’s why we are urging individuals and organizations to tell the Biden administration not to bring back Trump’s asylum ban!   Biden’s proposed new rule disproportionately harms Black, Brown, and Indigenous people seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border. It also directly contradicts his campaign promise to create a "fair and humane" immigration system.    The rule disqualifies asylum seekers who cross the border without an appt or who fail to seek protection in a transit county. But the appt system is extremely faulty, and its facial recognition disproportionately discriminates against Black and Indigenous people (link in bio). Senators have even called on DHS to ditch the app as it’s riddled with glitches, creates a tiered system, and is inaccessible to most (Link in bio). It assumes asylum seekers have access to shelter, cell phones, internet service, and that transit countries have fair/working asylum systems.   You can submit your oppositional comment today! A late but very warm welcome to Tanya Leon, OCJF's A late but very warm welcome to Tanya Leon, OCJF's Program Coordinator!  We appreciate all that you do for OCJF so much ❤️   Before Tanya Leon joined the OC Justice Fund as the program coordinator, Tanya had worked as a luxury event planner in Los Angeles, California. During that time, Tanya was also earning her master’s degree in International Studies from Chapman University and teaching adult ESL courses to refugees in partnership with various Orange County non-profit organizations. Tanya is passionate about understanding and improving both foreign policy and domestic policies that affect the diverse groups within the Orange County community. Previously, she did this while interning with the CA Workforce Development Board in California’s State Capital. She reviewed the positive impacts of programs that directly targeted previously incarcerated individuals and strengthened their skills to fast-track their workforce/community reintegration post-release. She believes her place in the human rights movement includes anywhere where she can use her background in data analysis and logistics paired with her passion for her community (she grew up in Fullerton, California).   Learn more about Tanya and her impact within our community in Chapman University's recent blog highlight, at the link in our bio!

In OC there are 11,624 residents defending against deportation, and  41% do not have legal representation.   In 2023, OCJF has already provided bond assistance to 5 individuals, and is continuing to provide our immigrant and refugee community members with services to successfully defend against deportation and stay in community with loved ones.
